Aglianico indigenous variety Domaine Hatzimichalis Cinque Athens

Ancient greek variety, popular in the region of Campania in Italy. Its repatriation took place few years ago at Opountia Locris, ‘chora’ (terroir) of Domaine Hatzimichalis and the result is an exquisite wine with history. Red grape variety, which name refers to Vitis Hellenica, leaving no doubt about its greek origin. Its great potential gives long living, robust and complex wines. Famous, during the Roman Times for the production of the Falernum wines, but also nowadays for the Taurasi.
Origin: From the selected single vineyards “Drisbay” and ‘Raches Galanou”, at the Slopes of Knimis, part of our vineyard in the region of Locris.
Vinification: Classic red vinification. It matures for 18 months in French oak barrels.
Alcoholic strength: 13% Vol
Ageing potential: For at least 10 years after its harvest.
Tasting notes: Deep ruby red colour with purple hues. Well-structured, “warm” aromatic composition of sweet spices, cinnamon, cloves, truffle and vivid black fruit aromas. Strength, intensity, aromatic opulence and powerful tannins compound a multi-dimensional wine with warm and long finish.

Aglianico (pronounced [aʎˈʎaːniko], roughly “ahl-YAH-nee-koe”) is a black grape grown in the southern regions of Italy, mostly Basilicata and Campania.
The vine originated in Greece and was brought to the south of Italy by Greek settlers. The name may be a corruption of vitis hellenica, Latin for “Greek vine.” Another etymology posits a corruption of Apulianicum, the Latin name for the whole of southern Italy in the time of ancient Rome. During this period, it was the principal grape of the famous Falernian wine, the Roman equivalent of a first-growth wine today.
Oenologist Denis Dubourdieu has said “Aglianico is probably the grape with the longest consumer history of all.”.

The Domaine Hatzimichalis has chosen to serve a unique ecosystem. This lies in Opountia Locris, a site in the valley of Atalanti in Central Greece which is surrounded by Mt. Knimida to the north, Mt. Chlomo to the south, Mt. Parnassus to the west and the northern Eubean Gulf to the east. The main natural trait of this ecosystem and its uniqueness is the cool breezes that flow from Mt Parnassus to the sea and vice-versa, in summer and winter alike.
This is the setting for the four blocks of terroirs of Domaine Hatzimichalis: the Old Vineyards, the Lower Vineyards, the Upper Vineyards –all known for centuries as localities and vine-growing sites– and New Vineyards, the terroirs created by the Domaine Hatzimichalis. Each of these blocks is divided into individual terroirs, and these in turn into different sections where we systematically cultivate different grape varieties.
