Tsigello is called the original grape expression of the Mavrodaphne variety. Here we meet it in its dry version, with a frisky violet colour and an intensively aromatic profile. Its aromas evolve in time and bring out notes of red fruits, laurel, vanilla and local greek herbs. It is a fresh non filtered wine whose well processed tannins occurred from a brief passage from hand-turned clay amphorae while its balanced structure comes from its passage from oak barrels.
The grapes come from one specific vineyard on the aigialeian slopes, on an altitude of 650m. These slopes are tilted and look towards the north. Their soil is mostly sand and clay on a geologic background of cohesive conglomerates with sand. Their yields are 60hl/ha.
About 150 years ago, German-born Gustav Clauss settled outside the city of Patras where he vinified the first sweet Mavrodaphne. Little could he have known at the time that the wine he had crafted would become one of the most identifiable products of the Greek vineyard. Nor could he have known that, today, apart from yielding some highly acclaimed sweet wines such as “Mavrodaphne of Patras” and “Mavrodaphne of Cephalonia,” the Mavrodaphne variety would also yield some equally touted and remarkable dry wines.
We have great respect for the land we cultivate on.
Thus we create, attending to the needs of this special place and combining tradition with modern practices.
The vineyard cultivation, the art of vinification and the way of consuming wine existed from ages ago. We are using ancient knowledge and experience acquired through the years. Combining them with modern science, oenology and viticulture we produce distinctive wines with character.
This is our goal, to produce wines of the highest quality that express the unique characteristics of the Aigialeian terroir that also match the modern tastes.
Quality has become a habit for us and someone meets it in every step of our work. It is there, from the work in the vineyards to the wine making process, in the gravity winery. It is present in our education. Quality is the foundation of everything we do and we do it with vivid enthusiasm.
