Yliana Stengou, is the woman that revive Domaine Porto Carras, by combining its old glory with a new finesse, and having the largest single, privately owned, biological, vineyard in Greece. Her contribution in the development and growth of Greek wine in the international market, gave her, the title of the Greek Wine Ambassador.
In 2001 she decided to enrich and improve her knowledge in the wine world as a wine producer, when the ‘’Technical Olympic’’ company, where she worked as a civil engineer, bought the whole property of ‘’Porto Carras Grand Resort’’ with a total area of 1’780 hectares. Her role is focused on the “Domaine Porto Carras”, a biological vineyard in an area of 475 hectares, in the western side of Sithonia, where with her personal care, occupation, love and passion, has managed to have more than 100 wine awards, in international competitions.
In her beliefs, is that the competitive advantage of Greek wine, in the international market, lies in the fact that behind the label is the Domaine’s history. She introduced the concept of wine tourism in Domaine Porto Carras, by interconnections with foreign agencies, specializing in wine tourism, from England, Netherlands, Scandinavia, Germany and America and developed tourism for the whole year.
She strongly believes in Greek wine. The Greek varieties are many and unique, but still unknown, to a lot of people. She believes that if we all co-ordinate and cooperate as “Wines of Greece”, many things can be done. No one wants to drink wine only from one producer, they want a taste of all Greek vineyards, so all of them can fit below the same “umbrella” of “Wines of Greece”. It is very important that Greece becomes a wine producing destination.
Domaine Porto Carras
The vineyards of one of the most historic estates in Greece, Domaine Porto Carras, stretch amphitheatrically over 475 hectares along the western side of Sithonia, Halkidiki.
The exemplary design of the vineyard, was created in the late 1960s by recognized scientific experts, so that the plants would adapt to the local environment and produce top-quality wines. It was here that the father of modern wine-making, University of Bordeaux Professor Emile Peynaud, set in motion the historic course of one of the first Greek Cabernet Sauvignons, which was ideally suited to the limestone shale soils of the estate and led to great international success, earning awards and distinctions.
The hilly lands of the area provide the perfect ecological conditions to grow 24 select varieties. White wines are produced from Assyrtiko, Athiri, Malagousia, Sauvignon Blanc and Roditis. The predominant red varieties include the famous Limnio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah.
The wines bear the PDO of Meliton Slopes identification and are vinified with expertise and care by experienced oenologists in the Domaine΄s facilities.
Nowadays, the Meliton Slopes vineyard is a model of organic cultivation, following modern international trends that respect the environment. Since 2000, a program of cultivation has been implemented and a major modernization and reorganization, of the winery, was completed.
Just a few meters from the winery, a renovated multi-purpose facility can host any supplementary activities that visitors may require for an integrated tour.
An indication of the increased quality that has been achieved in recent years through systematic efforts at Domaine Porto Carras, are, the more than 110 awards given to the Domaine΄s wines, at internationally recognized competitions.
