Greek beer, also known as “zythos” in Greek, is an alcoholic beverage produced from the alcoholic fermentation of barley malt, but it can also include other cereals such as wheat, rye, rice, or even sugar. Beer has been produced since ancient times and is available in many different varieties and types. Depending on the type of yeast used, we distinguish two main types of beer: Lager and Ale. References to beer brewing date back to around 4000 BCE. Today, the beer production industry is highly developed, encompassing several large companies as well as many thousands of small breweries. In Europe, the continent with the most breweries worldwide, there are currently more than 10,000 breweries in operation.
In recent years, Greece has seen a burgeoning craft beer scene, with the rise of microbreweries across the country. From the islands of the Aegean to the rugged mountains of Macedonia and Thrace, passionate brewers are harnessing Greek ingredients and traditional brewing techniques to create a diverse range of unique and flavorful beers.
At Cinque Wine & Deli, we’re proud to showcase some of the finest examples of Greek craft beer in our new tasting experience. Each beer in our selection is crafted with care and attention to detail, using local malts and water from each region to create truly distinctive flavors.
